So we discussed a few things last night. Mostly about the distro
because we need Matt and Moana to talk more about the label. So
here is an overview of the distro model. There are allot of
distros out there now. But we have some ideas that none of them
do yet. This is enough reason to start on our own project. It is
very important that I relay to you how bull shit we think
competition is. Competition is something that we have all been
brought up with as normal. Even told it's good. There are allot
of evil thing that come out of competition and without going into
much detail, we want to steer as far away from all of this as
posable. One overall goal of dod.net has always been to relay the
fact that if we do not embrace technology it will control us. By
embracing technology we can control it. The Internet is one of
the last sources of free speech we have left. Never before have
we seen so much corporate interest. Because of this corporate
interest the Internet is at risk of becoming just like every other
media and information outlet. Since these entities have become so
powerful and prevalent in our every day lives we have lost the
ability to see a world free of there influence. Cultures and
people have lost there lives to these monsters. Part of what the
distro has the ability to do is show the scene that there is an
alternative to the capitalist ideals we are use to. Some of the
ideas we have had about the distro directly attack the normal way of
behaving in a commerce environment. Right off we can see that
purchasing things from a collective that benefits the start of
more resources for the underground music scene is a different
model then any of the other distros out there. And with the
politics in the scene it has always been surprising that something
like this has not already appeared. Another great resource we have
is the Internet. Sure there are some distros that are selling
there stuff online... but none that allow the customer to interact
with the product. Lets run a small scenario.. You go to the distro
page looking for something. Once you find what you want you have
the ability to listen to the product on mp3's... Not one song or
just the one you want to hear but the the whole album. You can
make the decision of weather or not you want to buy it. If you do
you can purchase it right there using a credit/debit card or some
other online payment option like pay pal. You will also have the
ability to read reviews on the music... Not from someone who
wants you to buy it... But from what other people though about it.
This way you know the review is not a sales pitch. You can even
post your own review. Aside from that we can have a relational
database that allows this music to be cross referenced with things
like other releases from the same band.. So if you were looking
at something like Fugazi it would point you in the direction of
Minor Threat and Rights of Spring. This way you can look at and
review more music that would be of interest to you. All of these
things we can do. Sure it will be allot of work and we will start
out with the basic site and then work on the better one. But it
is all posable to do over the Internet. James and Ian you two
should get together with me and anyone else interested in talking
about the digital layout. We can talk about the user interface and
what we can do with it. So this is the overview of what the
distro can have that others don't. But it is also important we do
the standard table at shows and mail order stuff. We came up with
a few things we need to do. The idea is that we can delegate each
task off to a collective member. Each person will take
responsibility for something if they want to. If there are things
left over we will just take care of them later. Here are the
things we discussed last night. Since the distro is totally new
and there has been no work put into it yet we have allot to do.

01: We need to get a P.O. box. I have already started this for
dod.net and it takes a hell of a long time. Jess will be working
    on getting the box.

02: We need a bank account. This is also something that I will be
doing with dod.net. So this task is all about me. I will try to
find a bank that is smaller or local... The idea being that we are
not charged an arm and a leg for incoming and out going
transactions. I will also be looking for something that has
online banking. This is a huge asset when it comes to account
    management.

03: We need to figure out what sort of shipping methods we will
use. This is important because whenever someone mail orders
something they will be responsible for the shipping. The most
automated way to do this is the best. This task is up in the air.
We discussed easy ways to do this last night. Whoever does this
will want to look @ other mail orders and see how they do it.
Whatever we do it should be inexpensive shipping. Whoever wants
    this task, take it.

04: We need to pick the music. This is a fun task and I think
that Jess will also be working on it. Although she will be
looking for any suggestions from all of you. The idea here is that
Jess and whoever else would like to help are going to call the
labels that are putting out th music. Once the bulk rates are
figured out and the costs are all sorted Jess will order the music
from each label. Hopefully we can set the distro up with some
sort of wholesale account with most of these labels. On a related
note and something that I didn't bring up last night. We should
discuss with each possible band or label weather or not they would
be into allowing there music to be converted to mp3. This is
extremely important to the future of the underground music scene.
I think we should only resell music that bands will give us the
permission to put into mp3. Since this is part of the digital
model we are working on it is very crucial that we can push the use
of mp3's as a sales point. Some greedy corporations and bands are
fighting the ability for people to use there mp3's on the
Internet. Mp3's are a great tool that in a high-tech way can
relate to the romantic idea of making someone a mix tape.
Through the easy use and distribution of mp3's people can allow
there music to be heard by everyone with a computer. This only
facilitates the sale of music on traditional media. However there
is the corporate misconception that there is revenue to be lost.
One thing that it is important to do is show that corporate media
and distribution is nothing more then large companies attempting
to make a huge profit off of other peoples work. Music is all
about being heard. If a band plays a show and no one is there to
hear it... did the band ever really play? I can go on when it
comes to mp3's for hours. I would like to answer any questions
related to this though. Lets make sure the bands that we
distribute understand that losing the ability to distribute
digital media free of corporate intervention is the same as never
being able to make your friends a mix tape. So back to the
subject feel free to suggest ideas for music to Jess. Or help her
    if you like.

04: The name. We have yet to figure out what name we would like
to use. When this was originally planed we were going to make it
"Distro ofThe Damned". Since we have changed the goal of dod.net
to be a collective we would like to give everyone the opportunity
to suggest names for the distro. In fact we would prefer not to
use "Distro ofThe Damned" because it gives all of us mixed
feelings about what the collective really stands for. So the name
game is on. We had a few ideas floating around last night.. And
allot of prerequisite for the name. I will not get too into the
prerequisites... It just needs to be easy to spell, and catchy.
We were also trying to do some more things but they were limiting
our ideas. If posable try to suggest something that can work well
with a URI ( eg. http://distro.dod.net/ ). Since this is the one
thing we plan on offering that will make us stand out from the
other distros. One idea I know we were talking about was
    something short and catchy.

    OX Distribution ( http://ox.dod.net/ )

There were others but I was making everyone a vegan shake while
they were being discussed. Please send any ideas to the list and
we will put them all together and have a big vote on what we think
it should be. If posable please throw in the reason why you
think it should be called the name you chose.

That is about it for now... If you get this far I am amazed.
Sorry about the long message but we want to include everything to
everybody. Let me know if you have any questions or comments about
    the information discussed here.

    Regards,
    Chris
